KIYOMIZU Kyûbee
清水九兵衛 (1922 – 2006)
Japanese sculptor and ceramic artist | born in 1922 in Ôkute Town, now Nagoya City | after the outbreak of the Second World War, he studies architecture at what is now the Nagoya Institute of Technology | after the war, he studies sculpture at “Tokyo University of the Arts”; while still a student, he was adopted by the renowned sixth-generation master of Kyoto Kiyomizu ceramics, Kiyomizu Rokubei and begins to study ceramics | 1953 after graduating, he gaines recognition as a ceramic artist | 1960s after studying in Europe, he was influenced by the powerful expressiveness and magnificent scale of Western sculptures | 1970s creates abstract sculptures from aluminium alloys | 1981 takes the title ‘Shimizu Rokubei’ in the seventh generation and resumes his ceramic activities | 2006 he dies
