In 2006 the elaborate conversion of the coal washing plant was completed by OMA and the Essen architectural firm Heinrich Böll. In the same year, the construction of the Zollverein Cube was completed according to designs by the Japanese architectural firm SANAA. Already in 1997 the former boiler house was converted by Norman FOSTER for the “Red Dot Design Museum”.
