Kitsune is an actually existing fox species of Japan, but the same species is also considered a supernatural being that has the power to transform itself into a human, mostly beautiful women. Since the fox is familiar with the rice deity “Inari”, fox belief and the rice god have meanwhile developed into one. Ō-Inari (大稲荷) is the Japanese god of foxes, fertility, rice, tea and sake, agriculture and industry and general prosperity and worldly success. There is an Inari shrine in most places in Japan. The main shrine is the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyōto.
