fûjin 風神  raijin 雷神

“wind god” + “thunder god”

Deva

Instead of the niô, fûjin, the “wind god” carrying a windsock, and raijin, the “thunder god” surrounded by small drums (taiko) imitating thunder, can also stand as guardian figures at the entrance to a temple – see also Nikkô and Sensô-ji in Asakusa. According to legend, they used to be evil companions until they became good demons after being adopted by Buddhism.
