The museum is divided into five buildings. The Japanese art collection is housed in the largest building, the honkan. Designed by British architect Josiah CONDER, this gallery was severely damaged by the Great Kantō Earthquake in 1923 and rebuilt in a less Western style by WATANABE Jin.
