Japanese Waterfalls | Hartmut Pohling
Japan is a country exceptionally blessed with water and forests; thanks to its mountainous terrain and abundant rainfall, it is said to have an estimated 2,500 to 15,000 named waterfalls. The Japanese word ‘taki’ (滝), meaning ‘waterfall’, is composed of a poetic combination of the radicals for ‘water’ and ‘dragon’. For centuries, waterfalls have played a central and spiritual role in Japanese culture, Shintô and Buddhism.
