In 2006 the elaborate conversion of the coal washing plant was completed according to designs by the Dutch architectural firm OMA and the Essen architect Heinrich Böll. In the same year, the construction of the Zollverein Cube was completed by SANAA – although it does not stand on the original colliery site but at its entrance, it is counted as part of the overall ensemble. Already in 1997 the former boiler house was converted by Norman FOSTER for the “Red Dot Design Museum”.
