KUMA Kengo

The design by KUMA Kengo was developed between 1991 and 1994. Previously, there had already been a simple, conventional viewing point on the mountain summit. In order to restore the mountain top – which had been levelled by the previous structure – to its natural form, KUMA had the new observatory completely dug into the hillside. This project is regarded by experts as an early masterpiece of his philosophy of “invisible architecture” (‘Anti-Object’). Views of the sunset and the Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge are exceptional.
