With 123 storeys and a height of 556 metres, the Lotte Tower is one of the tallest buildings in the world. It houses galleries, cafés, a luxury hotel, a skywalk and a viewing platform from which visitors can enjoy views of Seoul illuminated at night. The company’s name comes from German: the founder, SHIN Kyuk-ho, was so inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – and in particular by his novel *The Sorrows of Young Werther* – that he named his company after Charlotte (often abbreviated to Lotte).
