Around 80 % of Japan’s nature is mountainous, most of it covered by forests and criss-crossed by rivers. Japan’s national symbol, Mount Fuji, is world-famous. Among the still active volcanoes, Sakurajima (“Cherry Blossom Island”), which rises from the sea in the bay off Kagoshima, is particularly well known. Mountains dominate the Japanese landscape and are popular destinations for leisure activities.
