The name hakubishin literally translates as “white bridge of the nose”. This is also the animal’s distinguishing feature. The striking, continuous white stripe running from the forehead over the nose to the tip of the nose is the distinguishing feature of this crepuscular and nocturnal predator. The masked palm civet is native to South-East Asia, China and the Himalayan region. How and when it arrived in Japan remains unclear to this day. Today, this omnivore is considered an invasive species in Japan and has become a major problem in towns and suburbs.
