Vairocana 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai

Dainichi Buddha

Dainichi Nyorai (jap. dainichi = “Great Sun”; skr. Vairocana) plays an important role in esoteric Buddhism, where he embodies the central figure in the concept of the “five wise Buddhas” (godai-nyorai). In Chinese-Japanese Buddhism, he was gradually supplanted as an object of worship by Amida Nyorai – as a result of the growing popularity of the “Pure Land” doctrine – but his legacy is still upheld in Japan both by the bronze figure in Tôdai-ji and by the Buddhist Shingon doctrine.
