kannon 観世

female figure of “Avalokiteśvara” (skt.)

Kannon-bosatsu (skt. Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva), also known as kanzeon-bosatsu, is one of the most revered bodhisattvas in Japan, together with jizô-bosatsu. Buddhist iconography recognises 33 different kannon appearances, including female ones – it is said that the exceptionally compassionate kannon divides her/his body into 33 parts in order to save and help people. Based on the number 33, pilgrimage routes have also formed in Japan, each with 33 kannon pilgrimage sites.
