MINAMOTO no Yoritomo
源頼朝 (1147-1199)
Following the final destruction of the Taira clan at the “Battle of Dan-no-ura” in the Kanmon Straits in 1185, Minamoto no Yoritomo was officially appointed shōgun in 1192. This appointment established Kamakura as the seat of Japan’s first military government (bakufu), shifting the country’s political center away from the imperial court in Kyôto.
