tea cultivation

As part of the tea ceremony, the tea garden fulfills its own distinct role. It is intended to mentally prepare the guests who enter it for the ceremony, help them leave their everyday lives behind, and create a sense of seclusion from the outside world. Elements of the garden include the entrance gate, the waiting bench, the water basin for the symbolic purification of mouth and hands, and the stepping-stone path that leads through dense shrubs and bamboo. At the center of the garden stands the teahouse, a simple hut covered with straw or bark. The tea room / tea house (chashitsu) used in the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu), where the host invites guests and serves tea.
