Kôbe Muslim Mosque

神戸ムスリムモスク

Kobe City 1935

It was the first mosque in Japan, built in 1935 with donations and funding from Turks, Tatars and Indian traders living in Kôbe. The need for the construction of a mosque in Kôbe was recognised because of the increase in the number of Muslims migrating to the city during and after the First World War. The main body of the mosque, made of reinforced concrete, had three storeys above ground and one below, and was designed by Czech architect Jan-Josef ŠVAGR
