In the western part of the city of Mito is the Kairaku-en landscape park, laid out by TOKUGAWA Nariaki and extended in 1842. The park, with its pine and bamboo grove, hundreds of plum trees and a replica of the Kôbuntei tea house, is one of the most important landscape gardens of the Edo period (1603-1868) and one of the “three famous gardens of Japan” (sanmeien) >>> Kôraku-en in Okayama + Kenroku-en in Kanazawa.
