Shinkansen 新幹線
The word for “Shinkansen” consists of three characters, which translated mean “new”, “main” and “line”. In October 1964, the year of the Olympic Games in Tôkyô, the first high-speed trains between Tôkyô and Ôsaka were opened to traffic. In the meantime, the “bullet train” has many different types of trains, which travel at speeds of up to 300 km/h. However, the super fast trains are not so much characterised by their top speed as by their high travel/average speed, safety, comfort and exceptional punctuality. Newest route opened: A segment of the line that connects Nagasaki to Takeo-Onsen – the Shinkansen Kamome – commenced service on 23 September 2022.
