Early summer shoka: approx. month of June to mid-July. Characteristics: Rainy season (tsuyu, baiu) – important for wet rice cultivation. Midsummer seika: Period: approx. mid-July to the end of August. Characteristics: High temperatures and humidity – with the exception of northern Japan. The obon festivities take place nationwide. Late summer banka: approx. end of August to end of September. Characteristics: Slow advance of cold polar air. First typhoons herald the end of summer.
